WebApr 12, 2011 · I might have the flywheel resurfaced. I have seen that a .020" shim is available that goes between the crankshaft and flywheel. When is the shim needed? I can understand that the surface of the flywheel will essentially be moved towards the engine the amount of the resurfacing, but I don't see how the little amount will make any difference. WebJul 15, 2006 · The thinnest thing I have around, a 1/2000" feeler gauge could not fit between the straight edge and the surface of the flywheel at any point. If I do have to resurface the flywheel, should I replace it or resurface it? I don't know the local price for resurfacing. EDIT Forgot to subscribe WebJul 16, 2011 · Assuming the flywheel in question is steel it can be resurfaced (like the ones we sell) if the flywheel is aluminum it cannot be resurfaced and you must buy a new steel friction insert. Obviously thickness of the flywheel needs to be determined by the machine shop, but the other factor to consider is if the flywheel is stepped or flat.
