WebJul 14, 2024 · The fitting instructions for the tray don't give any indication as to how thick the sand/cement bed should be - the ply is good and flat and the underside of the tray appears pretty flat too. Ideally I don't want to raise the tray up too high but I don't want the bed to be too thin if it will cause it to crack later. WebAug 30, 2005 · The fitting instructions aren't clear, but say to remove "suspended" flooring & replace with 18mm marine ply, before bedding the tray on sand & cement. Is it really necessary to pull up the T&G boards and replace with ply, or can the tray be bedded directly onto the T&G boards? The instructions also refer to a "tiling upstand". What's that?

The reason, "this smooths out any undulations between the floor and tray base". So far so good, obviously you need a rigid flat support. WebJun 14, 2024 · If you think about it, a good installation with a bead of silicone on the edges of the tray against the wall, plus tiles, finishing silicone or trim, makes the chipboard quite unlikely to get wet, unless something goes wrong. In that case plywood will only last longer, but eventually will give in.
